Mississippi Headwaters
September 16 - 18, 2009
Day 1 – Wednesday, Walker
We begin our journey north to the Mississippi Headwaters and other special locations in Minnesota with the hopes of seeing the start of fall colors during our travels. We arrive in Wadena to meet our guide that takes us on a journey of the Alley Arts Project, which is a collection of over 50 murals that are painted in the shape of puzzle pieces on commercial buildings portraying 1000 years of Minnesota history. Lunch is served at the Village Emporium in Wadena followed by a short time to explore the local shops. A treat is served before we depart for our next location. We travel a short distance to Perham to the fascinating ITOW Museum (In Their Own Words) that opened in 2006. Experience the emotions as veterans share recorded stories of their war-time and military experiences and their time of going back home. We also see some of the prominent sites in Perham via an open-air train on wheels. Tonight we stop for an included chicken dinner buffet and pizza buffet at the Pizza Ranch in Park Rapids. Clap your hands at the Woodtick Theater in Akely, which is a lively Branson type variety and musical show performed by seasoned locals in the area. We overnight at the Northern Lights Casino in Walker that offers $40 in slot machine vouchers to members of their player's club. (Brk) (L) (D)
Day 2 – Thursday, Bemidji
Time is allowed this morning to use the slot vouchers at the casino plus a discount voucher is provided for breakfast to player's club members. Later we arrive in Bemidji at the Headwaters Science Center to view a fascinating presentation about raptors (birds of prey) with time to view the other exhibits at the center. A chuck wagon lunch is served at Buena Vista Logging Village where we also see a working sawmill, horses, and a variety of artifacts, historic buildings and ranch facilities. We board an authentic horse-drawn covered wagon to ride on the high ridge known as the "Top of the World" as a guide shares stories about early native Americans, explorers and pioneers while viewing eagles, wild animals, spectacular views and beautiful lakes that flow to Hudson
Bay and the Gulf of Mexico,. See blankets and other items being constructed when we tour the Bemidji Woolen Mills late afternoon, followed by a stop at their retail store where woolen items may be purchased. Dinner is served at the Bemidji Town & Country Club on the shores of Lake Bemidji followed by the beautiful sounds of the flute and Celtic Harp that have been specially arranged to entertain our group. We overnight at the Best Western Bemidji. (L) (D)
Day 3 – Friday, Home
A deluxe continental breakfast is served at our hotel this morning before we depart for the Visitor's Center for a photo-op to see Paul and Babe, the blue ox. A local guide then shows us the sights and shares history about Bemidji on a tour of the city. Later we board the Chester Charles II for lunch and a narrated cruise of Lake Itasca as a naturalist points out wildlife, shares early history of Itasca State Park and Native Americans and takes us to the Headwaters of the Mississippi River. After the cruise, we stop to see the Headwaters up close and to take a step across this famous location at the beginning of the Mighty Mississippi. We have many diverse experiences to share as we head back to the Twin Cities. (CB) (L)
